Lobkowicz Palace at Prague Castle

While walking along Jirska street from the St. George Square (namesti U Sv. Jiri) to the eastern gate of Prague Castle, you will notice Lobkowicz Palace (Lobkovicky palac) standing in the place where first house appeared already in the 13th century. Lobkowicz Palace was built on the place of two large Gothic houses by Wolf Krajir z Krajku at the beginning of the 16th century followed by the lords of Pernstejn, one of the largest Bohemian noble families of the 16th century.
.
Lobkowicz family inherited this palace in 1627. Originally Renaissance palace with rich architectonic decorations was reconstructed for them in early Baroque style after the Thirty Years’s War.Only two halls and a chapel were left from the original palace.

The most splendid room of the Lobkowicz Palace is the banqueting hall with mythological frescoes from the 17th century. The Lobkowicz Palace used to house the exposition of older Czech history organized by the National Museum of Prague. Now it is used only for exhibitions and concerts.

Opposite the Lobkowicz Palace you will find a toy museum with toys from ancient Greece to the present. Charles IV. and his first wife Blanka of Valois stayed temporarily in that house during the reconstruction of the Old Royal Palace. He remarked in his own biography Vita Caroli that strange and mystical things happened in that house.
